UXPakistan: A Student-run Design Conference

UX Pakistan, being the largest non-profit conference, is the pioneering force behind design gatherings in Pakistan today, and is a dedicated platform to bring all product and service design disciplines together, from research, marketing and design, to technology, sales and business. Since its launch in 2017, UX Pakistan has grown from a few individuals into a network to more than 1500 people now. The initiative was started by Index, a student-led design and innovation society at LUMS under the supervision of Dr. Suleman Shahid, and is now supported by the leading design organizations in the country like Design Foundation and is supported by the industrial design muscle with companies like Designist, Cordoba, etc on board.
With a cumulative of 20 workshops and about 50 keynote speakers since its inauguration, UX Pakistan has been applauded and recognized by many leading experts in the industry and academia. We organize workshops on various design fronts, from Service Design, Virtual Reality to Design Sprints and Graphic Design, to name a few, which are moderated by leading practitioners in Pakistan and abroad. Moreover, a diverse lineup of subject matter experts at the conference, has successfully delivered and sparked conversations to understand design as a whole and enable digital customer satisfaction.
This year, we aim to provide a platform where design practitioners and students can undergo an inspiring and transformative experience that will help them learn design in Pakistan, while also getting to network with experts the industry. LUMS, being one of the most forward thinking, interdisciplinary universities in Pakistan, provides an excellent platform for curating and celebrating design gatherings in Pakistan.

Past Conferences

2020’s edition focuses on ‘The Past, Present and Future of Design in Pakistan’. We aim to explore our national design landscape while taking take an expansive and holistic view of the past, how has it shaped our present, and what the future of design in Pakistan entails more importantly, through the 4th edition of UX Pakistan, we aim to create a new vision and roadmap that will add value to Pakistan’s socially and economically. That means being both visionary, progressive, realistic and pragmatic. Therefore, in the ‘The Future’ segment, we will be taking a blue-sky approach towards envisioning how design, as a practice and discipline, needs to be taken forward. This involves looking at the future role of design and associated trends in the world and doing a gap analysis of where we stand in Pakistan today. We will take a look at the future needs of people and society, the future needs of businesses, and the future needs of the government and try to understand what role design has to play within that context. What bridges need to be built within academia and the industry, how can academia-industry collaboration be enabled. What type of outreach activities need to be done, and how, and when, in order to establish the value of design to businesses and government stakeholders. What are the strategies and entities that need to be employed that will lead to the wide-scale employment of design. And as we move into the future – which is being called the 4th Industrial Revolution – and some have even coined the term ‘Experience Age’ – what role does design have to play within this context, especially within Pakistan.

Well-designed and meaningful user-experiences are a collective effort between individuals with varying backgrounds that come together, bringing everything to the table. These individuals all share one thing though, an understanding of the need to solve real-world problems through out-of-the-box design thinking and collaboration amongst disciplines.

We call these people ‘Modern Creatives’. They are the thinkers of tomorrow, they are artists, designers, developers, architects, end-users and everything in-between. Not dwelling in the past, these individuals evolve constantly. Only through a conversation between these Modern Creatives, does meaningful user experience emerge.

2019’s edition aims to bring these individuals together on one platform to share, collaborate, learn, educate and emerge as the creators of tomorrow. We aim to bring an array of experts and participants to open up new and interesting conversations across different specialities and even different worldviews. Only through such variety can we explore new avenues for meaningful user-experiences and problem-solving.
